Clubs and Teams

Green Power

Greenpower is a STEAM initiative that allows students the opportunity to participate in a hands-on approach to engineering and project management. Participants of the Greenpower program design, build, and race student-driven electric race cars. Not only will students benefit from hands-on learning and critical thinking, they will also be able to polish their presentation skills. Racing is the reward for the hard work of the students and while it is a huge part of the program, the overall race scores are calculated with half coming from the team's presentation!

Science Olympiad Team

Elementary Science Olympiad provides students engaging learning opportunities in STEM in a variety of ways.  ESO may be used for classroom instruction, Science Days/Nights, Inter-grade level competition (such as a Science Field Day) and as a Competition.

Drama/Music

DEMA Drama Club is for k- 5th graders who have a love for acting and are willing to work hard on plays and programs. This will be a great opportunity for students to share their amazing talents with the Downtown Elementary Magnet Academy students and their families. These will be great performances to bring joy to our DEMA family!

Media/ Broadcast Team

Our 4th/5th grade students will lead video morning announcements  Our students with the assistance of our teachers will  run the show by writing, recording, editing, and producing the video. They record during the school day but a small dedicated group stays after every day to write the script for the next day while also building and uploading the video.

Math Team

Students who love math skills and are great problem solvers will participate in math competitions. If you have a competitive edge then this is for you.

First Lego League

FIRST® LEGO® League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children ages 4-16* through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today's students and teachers build a better future together.

K-3 Robotics

LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 is a hands-on, elementary science solution that develops science practices in the classroom through a robot-based learning system. With WeDo 2.0, students will explore, create, and share their scientific discoveries as they build, program, and modify projects. As they collaborate, they deeply engage with science, engineering, technology, and coding, sparking a love for experimentation and investigation.

3-5 Robotics

A club where 4th and 5th grade students will learn to design, build, and program cool robots using LEGO's most advanced robotics technology Lego Spike Prime. Through the design process, students will develop engineering and coding skills in building their robots. The teams will also participate in competitions throughout the district.

Social Studies Team

The Georgia Social Studies Fairs lead students, through competition, to learn, practice, and perfect research processes that can and should be used now and in the future to make informed decisions that impact both today and posterity. Local, regional and state social studies fairs annually present exhibitions of student work from grades 5- 12. Each project is designed to show research and conclusions about the study of people and their relationships to their physical and social environment.

Picture Bowl

Our Picture Bowl team helps to prepare our Kindergarten to Second Grade students for Reading Bowl. Students will read books and compete in a quiz format to earn points. Schools will form teams and hold practices over the next few months

Reading Bowl

Students will read books and compete in a quiz format to earn points. Schools will form teams and hold practices over the next few months. The books selected by the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl are the Georgia Children's Book Award Nominees. Some of the titles may have mature references. The references are historically based and will be handled appropriately during discussions and competitions. Parents may look up reviews online for more information.
